The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was set to be among three contenders competing for the Irish presidency, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, on Sunday evening he stated through a declaration he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and the standards he upholds."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to leave the presidential race with immediate effect and go back to my family," he said in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
