The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

In this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, prone to taking anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
